Do you remember what you did with your very first paycheck? Pavin Smith will probably never forget what he did with his.
In 2017, the 21-year-old was the seventh overall draft pick in that year’s Major League Baseball. He signed with the Arizona Diamondbacks and received a hefty $5 million bonus.
Instead of spending that money on a new house, a fancy car, or lots of champagne, Pavin decided to do something a little more selfless: pay off his parents’ entire mortgage!
The first baseman wrote a warm letter to his parents, in which he explained that his Christmas present was the mortgage payment. Then he sat them down and filmed their reaction to reading it.
Pavin wrote: “Thank you for raising me in a great home full of love. Because of all the sacrifices you made to get me where I am, I want our family home to be yours.”
Despite the magnitude of this present, Pavin says it doesn’t even begin to make up for all that his parents have given him. I have to say I agree – if I could pay off my parents’ mortgage, I certainly would.
This must have been one hard Christmas gift to follow. I have to wonder what Pavin did for his family the next year!
It should go without saying that Pavin’s gesture is beyond most of us – I mean, who has that much money lying around – but we can all agree that it’s certainly one that warms the heart all the same.
